Cerebral Activators

A cerebral activator, or cerebral metabolic enhancer, is a type of drug that “activates” the central nervous system in the context of cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke and dementia. The term has been used specifically to describe a few Japanese drugs, such as indeloxazine and bifemelane.

Cerebral vasodilators and metabolic activators (enhancers) for the treatment of cerebrovascular disorders (CVD) have been categorized and introduced into clinical practice according to their pharmacological actions and clinical indications. The main therapeutic goal of these drugs is to relieve residual subjective symptoms and neuropsychological dysfunction, which reduce the quality of life of patients in the chronic stage of stroke. Selection of the most suitable drug for the individual symptoms of each patient is an important therapeutic principle.

CNS-active medications : A type of drug that increases the levels of certain chemicals in the brain and increases alertness, attention, energy, and physical activity. CNS stimulants also raise blood pressure and increase heart rate and breathing rate.

Examples of CNS depressants are benzodiazepines, barbiturates and certain sleep medicines. CNS depressants are sometimes called sedatives or tranquilizers. Also called central nervous system depressant.
