
Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are used to treat various nonepileptic central nervous system (CNS) disorders, both in neurology and psychiatry.
Epilepsy is not a mental illness. In fact, the vast majority of people living with epilepsy have no cognitive or psychological problem. For the most part, psychological issues in epilepsy are limited to people with severe and uncontrolled epilepsy.
Anticonvulsants used to treat bipolar disorder include :
- Carbamazepine
- Divalproex sodium, valproic acid, or valproate sodium
- Lamotrigine
- Feeling tired and drowsy
- Feeling agitated (nervous or jumpy)
- Headaches
- Nausea (Feeling like you’re going to be sick)
- Shaking and tremors
- Hypersensitivity (being strongly affected by noise or light)
- Hair loss
- Weight gain
